Featuring members of Melbourne stalwarts Hannah Kate, Hoi Palloi, Tram Cops and Paper Tapir, the large collective of trained musicians creates music with sincerity and soul that makes your heart swell.
Led by the turbulent lyrics and powerful baritone vocals of songwriter and bassist Dougal James (Hannah Kate, Tram Cops), they forge syrupy harmonies and intricate rhythms that evolve and undulate in powerful and unexpected ways.
A typical Sunken Sea live show is a vast furnace of myriad influences. The giddy, cathartic energy of the band elevates the intimacy of Dougal’s songwriting to an otherworldly level.
Matt Si (Combinado, Moonspice) brings in his jazz-tinged, psyched out fretwork. Cian Bennet and Lucas Wilson-Harrison form a bright, off-kilter horn section which blends with the ethereal synth and vocal stylings of Hannah McKittrick (Hoi Palloi). The ferocious, lyrical drumming of Ben Fleming (Tali Mahoney, Paper Tapir, Tram Cops) thunders through the dense arrangements with Dougal’s thoughtful, melodic bass in tow.
