Recorded on a shoestring budget, like so many of their predecessors, and independently released at the start of 2013, the band’s debut, self-titled EP makes for a musical stomp-in-the-mud footprint. From protest song opener Election Blues, through to the heavy grit of Taxi Driver, to swamp-ballad Like a Dog and down-home sing-a-long Here to Stay, the EP has defined the breadth of The Ivory Elephant’s sound.
As well as playing regular shows around Melbourne, a highlight of 2012 was winning the Victorian final of the National University Campus Bands Competition. Competing with around 100 other Victorian bands, The Ivory Elephant took part in 3 heats to take out the state final. As state champions, the band were flown to Adelaide to represent Victoria in the National Final. The competition was judged by panels of industry experts on musicianship, originality, stagecraft and recording viability.
