The Genes - The Morning Sun

The Genes - The Morning Sun
Life-worn vulnerabilities crackle through vocals with a depth you wouldn’t expect to find on music this visceral. It’s still pure pop gelignite, just more distilled.

Blissed out melodies from Nolan and Morgan Angell and drummer Dominic Cutcliffe. The Genes have been consistently releasing music since their inception in 1997. The tunes were catchier than polio, just never quite bombastic enough for FM morning crews, nor self-conscious enough for the triple j playlist.

They stuck to their guns, with Nolan writing sub-three-minute masterpieces almost by default – happy yet haunting earwigs that burrow deep into the frontal lobe.

About this track...

The beguiling 'Morning Sun' could be the soundtrack to summer beers on your verandah when the north easterlies kick in – ‘I’ll go on, ‘til the morning sun comes out to get me.’ It’s only later that you suddenly realise the song is about a half-dead homeless man.
