Who are The Barren Spinsters?

The Barren Spinsters are a Canberra two piece that sound like a three piece.

We’ve all heard of ‘The White Stripes’ and ‘The Black Keys’ and thought the same thing. Where’s the bass?

Determined not to omit the most important groove instrument of the rhythm section, The Barren Spinsters have employed the use of their secret weapon…The Keybass

At first glance it may look like a gimmick but the concept is pretty stripped back, steering clear of programmed samples and loops. The keybass is a live bass instrument played in real time using the feet.

Edgy guitar riffs and relentlessly brutal drumming are combined with this low end keybass (which Brendon plays with his feet whilst simultaneously playing the guitar) to produce a funky, full bodied experience typical of a much bigger band. Result…face melting rock.

The Barren Spinsters have developed a sound which overrules standard band logistics. For a demonstration of how it all sounds put together, check out The Barren Spinsters short documentary on the making of ‘The Lounge Room Sessions’ which can be found on their website (www.thebarrenspinsters.com) or on their YouTube channel.
