Regional feminist post-punks Slag Queens have released a new single and film clip, ‘Waterfall’, a driving, garagey track commenting on the ‘MONA effect’ and the creeping shadow of gentrification that looms over Hobart. Directed by Sam Mountford and Tessa Campbell, the film clip references the cruise ships that frequent the Derwent over the summer tourist season. The ships and their towering presence next to Hobart’s low-rise city skyline serve as a regular reminder to locals of the influx of money, wealth and rising property prices. With each ship arrival, the local arts community, many of who have day jobs at MONA to keep their own practice financially afloat, call out to each other on social media warning of the thousands about to descend on the museum for their ‘art experience’.
Lucinda Shannon’s lyrics are delivered with bite and at times cynicism to the backing of her punctuated bass, Claire Johnston’s drums, Dan Kolencik’s synth and Tamara Kempton’s droning guitar. ‘Waterfall’ is the group’s first single off their debut album ‘You Can’t Go Out Like That’ due out on Hobart’s Rough Skies Records in early 2019. Rough Skies is co-directed by Slag Queens’ Claire Johnston and Julian Teakle (The Native Cats).
