Shoeb Ahmad - "mask-ed"

Shoeb Ahmad - "mask-ed"
Combining both acoustic and electronic approaches to music-making, Shoeb Ahmad has released a diverse range of original music - including critically acclaimed Watch/Illuminate on UK's Mystery Plays Records - while also collaborating with numerous directors and choreographers to provide material for live theatre and dance works.

More recently, Shoeb has begun to explore installation pieces and composition for chamber ensembles, taking inspiration from 20th Century avant-classical works, Indian ragas and minimalist electronic music.

Since November 2016, Shoeb has been working on new music for second solo album "quiver", which explores personal pasts and themes of identity (gender, race, religion) in an intimate noir-pop setting, inspired by the widescreen arrangements of The Go-Betweens, PJ Harvey, Tindersticks and The Temptations. The first single from this release is "mask-ed" along with remixes of album tracks from producers such as Aphir, Wives, Naif and MP from No Sister.

Shoeb has performed throughout Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the SE Asian region at venues such as The Judith Wright Centre (Brisbane), The Street Theatre (Canberra), Cafe OTO (London), Rough Trade East (London) and Pit Inn (Tokyo) with Australian festival appearances for Womadelaide, Open Frame, Liquid Architecture, You Are Here and TheNowNow.

About this track...

"mask-ed" weighs aching vulnerability against a loping groove, minimalist yet widescreen all at once.

"This song revolves around the secrecy I maintained around my exploration of gender, counterpointed by the idea of acceptance." - Shoeb Ahmad
