Scott Matthew - The Wonder Of Falling In Love

Scott Matthew - The Wonder Of Falling In Love
Scott Matthew may have started as a Brisbane punk in the band Nicotine, before teaming up with ex-Morrissey man Spencer Cobrin for the group, Elva Snow. But since going solo three albums ago and becoming the singing revelation in Director John Cameron Mitchell's follow-up to Hedwig & The Angry Inch, ‘Shortbus’, he’s been making tragically beautiful music, brimming with longing, hope and love.

Rolling Stone magazine aptly likened him to Antony Hegarty and androgynous-era Bowie, but for this 3rd LP Gallantry’s Favorite Son, our bearded angel reveals himself more confidently, sometimes even joyfully, weaving connectors between Scott Walker, Devendra Banhart; Council-era Paul Weller and Burt Bacharach.

Goose bumps still arrive regularly; indeed Matthew’s emotive quiver still “cuts like lovingly administered razors” [Sydney Morning Herald].

Administering to our innermost cores, Matthew elixir is a mix of dark cabaret, restorative folk and gently caressing ballads.

Little wonder Rhythms Mag dubbed Matthew “Mesmerising,” while “Extremely Beautiful,” “Heartbreaking,” “Stunning, Haunting,” “Hypnotising… Gorgeous… Captivating” are some of the descriptors proffered by other reviewers.

Clearly, Matthew’s emotional investment in songs is huge; they’re a heart to heart exchange with listeners, continually unfolding like a diary whose secrets are shared with an intimate circle of friends.

About this track...

Featuring Matthew's haunting voice - that many have likened to early-Bowie - this first single from Gallantry's Favorite Son, finds the singer in a surprisingly hopeful mood, surrounded by Bacharach-style pop-strings and early Weller-esque Council-Stylings. Hum-a-long chorus harmonies, transport the metropolitan folkie onto the set of a Technicolor musical.
