The majority of songs from this record resulted from the 100 songs in 100 days songwriting challenge that I set for myself in the second half of 2016. The album was an experiment for me. It was my first foray into late 60’s and 70’s style live studio recording, as opposed to multitrack. And I wanted a strong emphasis on input from other members of the band, taking advantage of their expertise and specialisation. I wanted to create an album that sounded human, mistakes and all.
It was recorded completely live over three days. I also wanted a good combination of speed and vibe.
For me, the record has clearly taken inspiration from Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited record, with dashes of John Martyn, Wilco and The War on Drugs. In fact, the track ‘Be Your Baby’ is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek nod to Dylan… This is an album about songwriting and personal musical experimentation.
