The guitar sits in the corner of the room, with note pads and blunt pencils scattered around. It whimpers and whispers at me until I find myself lost in time, caught up in a web of rhyme, meter and melody.
Writing a song is the most addictive thing – the dance you can do with a few chords, a simple idea, and a little solitude. The end result is not always something profound but still rewarding and at times, therapeutic.
I have just released an album of songs ready to share with the world. There is fear, there is doubt, and there are voices in my head (1000 bastards) telling me this songwriting caper is madness.
But there is a joy in songwriting that cannot be ignored. A certain type of peace that comes from trying to make sense of your thoughts with words and music, no matter how crazy those thoughts may seem.
Does sharing words and music with people who want to listen really have to be such a daunting, scary prospect? I don’t think so.
