Rafael Karlen - The Promise of Postcards
Rafael is a Brisbane-based saxophonist, arranger and composer. In 2009 he released his debut album with the ten-piece ensemble The West End Composers Collective which received critical acclaim and featured Rafael as a composer, saxophonist and flautist.
In 2009 he was a finalist in the Bell Awards for both Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and Best Jazz Composition of the Year categories, received a Q150 Composer Commission, and was the 2009 Composer-in-residence with the West Australia Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2008, Rafael was a finalist in the APRA/JMO National Big Band Composition Competition in Sydney. In 2014, Rafael was commissioned to compose works for his quintet to be premiered at the opening of the 2014 Brisbane International Jazz Festival, the Divergence Jazz Orchestra (Sydney), David Theak with the Nexus Saxophone Quartet (Sydney) and the 2014 DeClassified Music Series featuring his trio with Kristin Berardi and Sean Foran.

Rafael released his latest album in 2014, featuring his music for string quartet, improvising pianist and saxophonist which is receiving critical acclaim. He has performed in England, Scotland, Sweden, and Canada and throughout Australia.

The Promise of Postcards is taken from the Arrivals and Prospects Suite by Rafael Karlen which explores the charged landscapes of nostalgia and lingering reflection, across to the anticipation and excitement of a future destination. Performed live at the 2014 Brisbane International Jazz Festival.
