During the long break between The Messenger and Seven Years, Matt took a hiatus from music and the city life and retreated to St Leonards, a quiet sea side town. It was here in somewhat isolation that Matt wrote the majority of his second album "Seven Years”. A year or so later, re-energised by the process of making that album, the positive reception it received (the album was nominated for a Victoria Music Award) and a tour with musical mentor Grant Lee Phillips, Matt was eager to launch into making another record.
Building on the musical direction of the previous two records and yet forging its own unqiue place in the Matt Joe Gow canon, Break, Rattle and Roll ranges from the Stones-esque rock and roll to the hushed heartbreak of songs like 'Old Hotel Room”. The album features guest spots from popular Melbourne acts The Weeping Willows and Greta Ziller as well as Katya Harrop who also appeared on Seven Years.
