The SBS and TEDx featured artist creates intricate experimental music using world instruments and rethought everyday objects, influenced by experiences like his childhood stint as a Buddhist monk, a deep immersion into street jazz in New Orleans, touring with Japanese loop-pedal ninja Kenta Hayashi, co-founding folk-punk band The Mouldy Lovers, and an upbringing steeped in world music through his Taiwanese immigrant roots.
Matt has collaborated with music icons Tenzin Choegyal (Tibet), Kenta Hayashi (Japan), Ben Ely (Regurgitator) and Gabriella Cohen, and performed at BIGSOUND. Matt also wrote a #1 charting song on 4ZZZ and is a QMusic Award nominated musician.
Enamoured with instruments from around the world, he plays shakuhachi, furulya, mbira, t’rung, ocarina, accordion, trombone, marimba, vibraphone, clarinet, trumpet, banjo, double bass, and tubular bells — combined with reimagined everyday objects such as bicycle spokes, timber planks and seashells to create unusual percussive sounds. Matt places great importance on respectfully learning the cultural meanings and significance of each instrument, before adding them to his repertoire.
