What does a one-person experimental orchestra look like?

Matt Hsu (mat-shoo), a founding member of Australian gypsy-punk icons The Mouldy Lovers is stretching lately — finding himself unable to stop writing music that can be contained in a band format.

Stepping out from the safety of an 8-piece ensemble, Matt is creating solo compositions that are bold, kooky, ethnic, local, unearthly, intimate, grand, playful and with no limit to scale — the definition of fluid experiments in sound, sculpted into song.

Matt learns, plays and records all instruments and field recordings himself using an inventory including trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn, mbira, accordion, t’rung, clarinet, double bass, shakuhachi, tin whistle, furulya, banjo, kitchen utensils and found objects (so far).

Steeped in world music since childhood by virtue of immigrant roots, he seeks the grey areas between cultures and their sounds. Matt found family in the intoxicating gypsy-infused caravan of The Mouldy Lovers, a band that has become part of his blood and being; and took on a free-folk apprenticeship of sorts, joining Virginia Sook - learning to craft songs with sensitivity, subtlety, and nuanced layering. From these experiences and influences, Matt is creating something entirely his own.
