Having received the Billy Thorpe Scholarship in 2017, 2018 will see the release of Marville's second LP Terra Alpha.
Produced by Joe Hammond (Courtney Barnett, Tim Rogers, Jen Cloher, Fraser A. Gorman) at his Pots and Pans studio, Ash Kerley’s muggy, transformative guitar undulates heavily over the record, occasionally (and at time, brutally) propelled by Doug Palmer’s stark drumming. Described by Hammond as “a lifer” when it comes to music, songwriter and Girls Rock Brisbane program facilitator Kerley’s rich, dry vocals parse themes of impatience, headiness, tension and, ultimately, release.
Weighting private, ambient moments (Speak Easy, Making Hay) as heavily as gritty, cacophonous ones (9-Iron, Fickle), Terra Alpha is an unabashedly human record: ever-changing, and wearing its emotions on its hand-painted sleeve.
Terra Alpha is out Friday 30 March with metro and regional tours to follow.
