Mardi Lumsden is an alt-folk singer–songwriter from Brisbane, Australia.

“Our Lady of the Highway” is the first single from her upcoming (and aptly named) debut album, Hiatus, recorded and produced by husband Andrew Pennay in their Brisbane home, a converted church. Lumsden and Pennay have crafted the entire album themselves; placing every microphone, playing every instrument and riding every fader.

Mardi has played everywhere from Brisbane to Bethlehem. Her music captures the simplicity and intricacies of human nature.

‘Our Lady’ hints at a dark undertone to Lumsden’s new work and is a step on from the whimsical alt-folk she has previously released. When asked to define her new sound, Lumsden says, “sad songs that sound happy”.

Mardi Lumsden & the Rising Seas' second EP, Wherever you go, there you are, was recorded with ARIA-award winning producer Magoo at his Applewood studio west of Brisbane, another converted church.

The song "Pieces of the Story" was featured on Australian TV shows including ABC’s Dance Academy. The film clip for the song has had over 96,000 views on YouTube.

The EP’s closing track, "Classified (WVTM)", won the 2010 Q Song Folk/Ballad award and was a finalist for Song of the Year.

About this track...

I was struck by the public nature of highway prostitution in Italy. There she was, leaning against a rusty caravan. Who was she? Did she have a choice?

“Our Lady" ended up being two stories: Hers: she is trapped in this world but determined not to let it define her. And mine: we accept what we drive past. We shouldn't.
