Mallee Songs - Drinking The Sea

Mallee Songs - Drinking The Sea
In 2014, Mallee Ensemble released a free double album. Few heard it, but those who did were struck by its strange restlessness. Recorded in improvised bursts using whatever was on hand, Two Volumes sprawls out like a gravel road through lonely pine barrens, documenting five years of home recording. The record touches on psych-folk, hazy pop and long-form drone, producing a collection at once solemn and joyous. It recalls, more in spirit than sound, Palace Music’s Lost Blues, the freewheeling of American Water, and the damaged Americana of Jackie-O Motherfucker.

Mallee Songs is the live incarnation of Two Volumes and the songs that have been written in its wake. Since then they've released the lo-fi Gum Creek and Other Songs, and Natural Times, its more refined and polished follow up. On Suburban Horse (due late 2018) – the title a perfect mixture of local and pastoral, inner and outer – frontman Michael Skinner has written some of his best songs yet, while retaining both the rough edges and soft focus that lends music inherent mystery and magic.

About this track...

Drinking The Sea paints a picture with a rich mix of instruments - hushed acoustic, fiery electric, organs, and various percussive touches added for colour. Vocals are carefully balanced against this, unusually tender and restrained. Often letting the last word of each line fall into hesitancy or a whisper. A rare demand of intimacy on a record besotted with quietude.
