Lucky Oceans was born Reuben Gosfield in Philadelphia and played in high school bands with his pal Ray Benson Seifert. Reuben became a devotee of the slide guitar after seeing blues legend Son House in concert. From the bottleneck guitar, it was a short leap to the pedal steel guitar, an instrument that offers many more ways to slide a note. Reuben and Ray decided to start a country band, adopting the stage names of Lucky Oceans and Ray Benson. Lucky named the group Asleep at the Wheel.

“Hank Williams was a pivotal figure during my initial love affair with country music in the early days of Asleep at the Wheel,” Lucky says. “He personified the transition in American music from big bands to small combos, from folk songs to composed, confessional songs. Hank and Louis Jordan fashioned a sound that worked on a jukebox. It wasn’t as thick as a big band or a banjo band; it was a more concise, focused sound. They led the way to Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. And the steel guitar was a prominent part of Hank's music.”

About this track...

A slow, brooding groove. Lucky says "Kasey and Bill always knew this was the Hank Williams song they wanted to do for the album. Kasey had the key ready and a low-pitched way for Bill to whisper the chorus. The original only has a brief steel guitar interlude but we expanded it out with a full introduction and solo."
