Inspiration for ‘All That’s Gained’ emerged from her science fiction musings and from living in one of the most densely populated vertical cities in the world.
The EP’s title track, ‘All That’s Gained’, is inspired by Chinese Science Fiction author Chan Koonchung’s ‘The Fat Years’. It considers the stalemate between young people coming of age in China’s impending “Golden Age of Ascendancy” as Koonchung imagines it and a Chinese government maintaining economic growth and stability through strict control. “And it's live or die together/When the victor pays the higher price,” Dance sings on the track. “When neither side can surrender/When all that's gained is lost.” Shot during Dance’s 15 city solo tour across China, the music-video features tattoo sleeved, muddy teenagers, hugging and head banging to China’s most beloved metal bands at some of China’s biggest music festivals.
