Emerging from Western Australia's south, it was inevitable that Joel Barker's music would be deeply rooted in the blues/roots genre. Following the strong tradition of independent musicians from Western Australia's southern corner including John Butler and the Waifs, Barker brings a new edge to the contemporary roots genre with his infectious rock slide guitar and delicate vocal.
In 2012 Barker received national airplay for his debut album 'Traces'.
“Overall traces is a very personal, intimate collection of songs that will impress fans of Barker’s previous work and any newcomers. With his first solo album, Barker has created a solid foundation for what will be hopefully a very promising career with great things to come” Scott Aitken of Drum Media Perth.
In 2013 Joel Barker moved to England for six months to write and record the forthcoming album ‘Beyond the Crows’ due October 2014. Recorded at Café Music Studios in East London, home to Mercury Prize nominated artist Jon Hopkins, ‘Beyond the Crows’ was recorded over the space of twenty days by producer and engineer Cherif Hashizume. Accompanying Barker on the album is his sister Emily, Matt Park from English indie rock band Mystery Jets and Beth Orton guitarist Ted Barnes.

About this track...

City documents Barker’s conversations with a woman of African decent living in London who lost her husband and because of this felt a greater attachment to an inherited place. City explores the idea that a place acts as a trigger for emotions and memories, bonding you to that specific location.
