Amrap's AirIt | Australian Music Radio Airplay Project :: Rock :: James Thomson - Dry Lightning

James Thomson - Dry Lightning

James Thomson - Dry Lightning
Inspired Bruce Springsteen songs covered by 23 Laughing Outlaw artists.

What’s With The Title? It’s a reference to a still ticklish 1970 Monty Python sketch revelling in ocker stereotypes, and also an encounter between Springsteen and album curator Stuart Coupe.

Bruce Springsteen has been central to my life since I first heard Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. in 1973. Over the years I’ve interviewed him a number of times and seen countless shows in Sydney, Paris, New York, Philadelphia, Austin, Washington D.C.,Los Angeles - and New Jersey. When I first proposed the idea of a Bruce covers album to the Laughing Outlaw family of artists, well, I knew there were obsessives like me on the label, but I didn’t realise how deeply a love for his music ran through the whole roster. The result of that magnificent obsession is what you’re holding. This essay was published in Roadrunner Magazine in 1981 It’s all about seeing and interviewing Bruce for the first time in Paris in 1981 - and what it means to be a rock’n’roll fan. I hope you enjoy it. Stuart Coupe 2013
