Helen fell in love with the cello at the age of three and has been playing and writing for the instrument ever since. Starting her musical life in New Zealand in a strictly Classical music household where only the slightest hint of Beatles, ABBA and Neil Diamond permeated. After studying cello and composition at Victoria University, Wellington, Helen ran away to Melbourne in 1986 and began performing on acoustic and electric cello with Melbourne art-rock band Not Drowning Waving. Best known to Melbourne Recital Centre audiences for her performances with the much loved chamber pop ensemble My Friend the Chocolate Cake and with gypsy/tango band Cosmo Cosmolino, Helen also writes music for film, theatre, and dance. Helen has also had the privilege of playing and recording with many of Australia's favourite musicians including Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Frank Yamma, Midnight Oil, Missy Higgins, Archie Roach, Deborah Conway, Tim Finn, Kylie Minogue, Gurrumul, John Butler Trio, Blackeyed Susans, George Telek, Underground Lovers, Vika and Linda Bull, Hunters and Collectors, and lots more she can't remember or prefers not to.
About this track...
In this song, the two lower strings of the cello are detuned which gives the instrument and even sadder more mellow sound. This piece was definitely inspired by the wonderful solo suites for cello by JS Bach.
