Great Aunt is an alt-folk/Americana duo from Melbourne, Australia, rambling a musical line between the plaintive and the joyous.
Led by Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Megan Bird, Great Aunt pays homage to a range of musical influences including early folk, blues, and gospel. Though uniquely Australian and contemporary in its themes, Bird's songwriting invites comparison with the work of artists such as Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Shakey Graves, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Jack White, amongst others. In 2016, Great Aunt travelled to Nashville, Tennessee for an extended songwriting sojourn, and a series of gigs and showcase performances at local venues, including the world-famous Bluebird Café.
Performing as a duo, Great Aunt features the talents of Bird (guitar/mandolin/lead vocals) and Chelsea Allen (double bass, backing vocals, drums).
Great Aunt is currently performing in a range of venues around Melbourne, touring QLD and NSW in Sep 2017, and preparing for the release of their debut EP.
