After the demise of Prettymess in 2006, John headed to the US. With nothing more than an acoustic guitar and harmonica, he travelled coast to coast in a gold '72 Caprice, playing bars and busking. In 2009, he met pianist Henry F. Griffin in Baton Rouge and they began performing, writing and recording together. From this collaboration many tunes would eventuate on the Five Mile Sniper debut album.
Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee and Melbourne, the album title The Sound Of Trees is analogous to suffering in silence. The Sound Of Trees is a euphemism for the decaying natural world we've inherited that has no voice - a cry for help that cannot be heard. It conveys moments of optimism with an undertone of loss.
