East Brunswick All Girls Choir - Essendon 1986
New single 'Essendon 1986' premiered on Zan Rowe's Mornings program on Double J, the accompanying video was shot in Castlemaine and directed by Thomas Hyland.

Teddywaddy is the long-awaited second album by East Brunswick All Girls Choir. It's also a slumbering patch of country in northwest Victoria, now mostly farmland. Sitting 90 minutes from Bendigo, where frontman Marcus Hobbs grew up, and he knows the drive all too well from regular visits there to see his father’s family.

Co-produced with Anna Laverty (Courtney Barnett, The Peep Tempel), the album is etched deeply with such contrasts. For every spacious swath of majesty, there’s some punked-up exorcism.

Alongside Hobbs who pens the songs is bassist/keyboardist Rie Nakayama, drummer Jen Sholakis and guitarist Rob Wrigley. The Melbourne ensemble debuted with the 2009 mini album Dead Air, then followed it up with 2014’s Australian Music Prize-long listed Seven Drummers. In the years since, they’ve supported The Peep Tempel, Gold Class and Cash Savage & The Last Drinks while building to this new album.

Teddywaddy is the most profound and riotous statement of the band’s career, anchored at every turn by the ragged glory of Hobbs’ eruptive singing and the piercing details of his lyrics.

About this track...

'Essendon 1986' is an old song revisited and accelerated. The song's about the drudgery lumped upon the working class in order to maintain. It's about the little things people do in order to feel like they’re not churning the butter, often to feel like they’re not where they really are.

MUSIC DIRECTOR PICK: Aeron Clark, Edge, Hobart (TAS)
