Amrap's AirIt | Australian Music Radio Airplay Project :: Jazz :: Cigany Weaver - Sweet Georgia Brown

Cigany Weaver - Sweet Georgia Brown

Cigany Weaver - Sweet Georgia Brown
Formed out of a love for the legendary partnership between Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grapelli, Cigány Weaver is one of Australia's most exciting gypsy-jazz ensembles, with a dedicated and passionate following around the country. Their sound is reminiscent of jazz Manouche, traditional swing and Romani music, interwoven with compelling originals and the band’s reinterpretations of classics from popular culture. Through virtuosic and energetic live performances, Cigány Weaver invoke everything from subtle toe-tapping to exuberant dance floor foot-stomping.

The band has performed at many major festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (QLD), MONA's Dark Mofo (TAS), Wallaby Creek Festival (FNQ), Cullulleraine Music Festival (SA), Tablelands Folk Festival (FNQ), Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW) and OzManouche (QLD). Whilst touring extensively around Australia, the band also maintains regular appearances in their hometown, at Brisbane's most popular live music venues.

2019 will bring the eagerly anticipated release of the band’s debut self-titled studio album, alongside a stack of inter-state tour dates.

About this track...

"Sweet Georgia Brown" sees the band put their unique spin on a Gypsy Jazz standard, with sultry, smooth vocals from Jo Davie luring the listener in. The band then kicks it up a gear, complete with fiery solos from violinist Gareth Mewes and guitarist Rory Dollard, and storms home with a high-energy finale.
