Bandito Folk - Into the Fire

Bandito Folk - Into the Fire
Another great record out of the Brisbane underground. One that knocks most of the things we hear in the commercial mainstream for six. This is a perfectly formed pop-rock four tracker that serves as a tasty introduction for a band led by chief songwriter Josh Tuck, whose winsome melodies and deft lyrical touch mark Bandito Folk as one of the best of new local bands. 'I'm waiting for someone to change my mind,'' Tuck sings on the opener Don't Wanna Be Like You, a song that aches with all the unanswered questions that make the cusp of adulthood so messy for most of us (and such fertile ground for songwriters). Even better is Hacky Sack, where Tuck observes: "Cheer up kid, shit gets better right after high school/Everyone will love you but it will become a drug to you.'' Like I said, messy. Into The Fire pulls back the tempo without any loss of intensity of emotion and shows Tuck's lilting tenor and the band's razor-sharp arrangements to impressive effect. My only reservation is with the name, since they aren't a folk band. Fans of Jeff Buckley or Middle East, be prepared to hear something special. COURIER MAIL: Noel Mengel****
