Anna Salleh - Noites Cariocas

Anna Salleh - Noites Cariocas
Anna Salleh grew up listening to her father's Ella Fitzgerald records. As a performer she cut her teeth in acappella groups, jazz bands and improvised theatre in Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and Edinburgh. But in 2010, she rediscovered the beauty of Brazilian music that first captured her imagination as a child, when she saw the film 'Black Orpheus'. She spent three months in Rio de Janeiro performing with local musicians, and seeking out the wisdom of elders to deepen her understanding of Brazilian music - including discovery of the lyrical genre of 'choro' music. Her journey of musical discovery in Brazil led to ABC radio documentaries, a stage show and two albums A Felicidade (2012) and Gorgeous Songs from Brazil & Beyond' (2016).

Anna performs in duos and bands with some of Australia's top world/jazz musicians including guitarist Guy Strazz. As well as internationally, she has performed in numerous local venues and festivals such as the Brisbane Jazz Club, Melbourne's Paris Cat, Seymour Centre's Sound Lounge, the Opera Bar, The Park Hyatt, Star City, El Rocco, Illawarra Jazz Festival, Venue 505, The Vanguard and The Basement. She and her band currently hold a residency at Sydney's premier jazz club Foundry616.

About this track...

Noites Cariocas (pronounced 'noichez kah-ree-oh-cahs') means 'Rio Nights' and is in the choro style. This form of music from Rio de Janeiro was originally instrumental but this song is set to almost untranslatable Portuguese lyrics that touch on themes of sleepless nights from a vexed relationship. Call it 'Brazilian vocalese'!
