Said to be “possessed with one of the most powerful voices in Melbourne” (Inpress magazine), Roni Shewan is an artist who is sincere, individual and highly creative. She first gained notoriety in the Australian music scene for her work in respected progressive/art rock band A State of Flux. With this group she recorded several releases, gained radio airplay and toured nationally to rave reviews. Her membership in this band was the first of much collaboration with producer Red Black.
2010 saw the live debut of the Roni Shewan Band, an ensemble featuring some of Melbourne's finest musicians. The group have been compared to and inspired by a diverse range of musicians including Kate Bush, Radiohead, Goldfrapp, Camille, and Scott Walker. Their original compositions blend trip-hop, folk, ambient, avant-pop, rock, and jazz; with thought provoking lyrical content exploring history, femininity and avant-garde.
Helen/This Place We Get To is Roni Shewan’s first release as a solo artist. Produced by Red Black, the double single is an ambitious blend of acoustic and electronic elements, with subtle instrumentation, east-Asian percussion and sophisticated vocal layering. The release also features the talents of local musicians Mijo Biscan (Lamplight) and Genevieve Fry (The Guns of St Sebastian).
