La’i (pronounced la-ee) is a fresh voice on the international music scene. Growing up on the beaches of Australia and Hawaii she has developed a signature sound that, combined with her pure voice, has drawn comparisons to her Hawaiian neighbour Jack Johnson and the late singer Eva Cassidy.
The Sydney-based teenager’s debut EP Daylight Breaks is a collection of original songs and interpretations representing her life up until now. The record has been named after the very first song La’i wrote at age 14 after a sleepless night.
‘A lot of my spare time at school was spent in the boarding house, sitting on my bed with my guitar and a notepad. I think these songs are warm and comfortable and I hope people will relate to them.’
The collection of songs also includes pieces originally recorded by A Fine Frenzy, Lucie Silvas and Sarah Humphreys.
Capturing the honesty and magic within her songs and interpretations, the first half of the Daylight Breaks EP was recorded with her high school guitar teacher Rory O’Donoghue. The second half of the EP was recorded live at Trackdown Studios during La’i’s first visit to a professional recording studio.

La'i (pron: la-ee) wrote Break It to My Heart when she was 15. "A boy I really liked turned out to be a massive disappointment and the feeling of betrayal was intense. I really needed someone to hear me I guess," said La'i.
