Late 2011, in tandem adventures to uncover the truth behind the new music they were writing, the two songwriting members of Jinja Safari - Marcus Azon and Pepa Knight - saved their pennies and travelled to the source countries of their respective musical influences. Whilst Pepa trekked through high-altitude Indian mountain villages, staying with local families and field-recording exotic instruments, Marcus took to discovering his family’s history in Uganda; specifically, to see his Grandmother in her own home town, Jinja, located on the shores of Lake Victoria. Taking the time to immerse himself with the locals, Marcus carried with him a small dictaphone to record the drums, voices and songs of his Grandmother’s home town.
Using this new traversing inspiration and their incredible journey from 2010 triple j Unearthed Award winners to now, Jinja Safari have taken the first step towards their forthcoming debut album with new single ‘Toothless Grin’.
About this track...
‘Toothless Grin’ takes what you know from Jinja Safari’s expansive and exotic pop-scapes and infuses it with the thunderous rhythmic framework which is reminiscent of their manic and now-infamous live shows. Jinja Safari enlistied NYC-based producer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Friendly Fires) to impart his mixing magic on this track.
