Trichotomy - Strom     Jazz, Instrumental 20/03/2013
Musically assured with bold music vision, Fact Finding Mission places the Trio at the forefront of modern creative jazz. The trio sound is inventive and exciting with spirited group creativity.
Meaning stream, current or flow. It's upbeat and joyful - which sums up the album as a whole and was an easy choice as an album opener. I'd been listening to a bit of Avishai Cohen at the time and was inspired by the sense of energy in his group.

Barney McAll - Jazz Epidural     Jazz, Electronic, Soundscapes, Experimental 21/09/2012
Barney McAll’s innovation and talent, now as a New York based artist, has continued to evolve, never stagnant and never without purpose, as this truly stunning new recording will attest.
Composed by Barney McAll and Sia. Lead vocal and Invenio choir arrangements by Gian Slater. A travelling uptempo style, that changes a little more than half way in to a slow tempo. McAll's piano is dynamic throughout.

Other tracks by Barney McAll:  Firefly  -  Catch A Falling
Jamie Oehlers Quartet featuring Ari Hoenig - Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today     Jazz 21/08/2012
Australian Jazz Musician of the Year at the 2007 Bell Awards, and is now coordinator of Jazz Studies at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
The tracks recorded here come with a specific image in mind, a recollection of a time past, or a hope for the future. The beauty of this art form is that the listening process is subjective. I truly hope you enjoy it and find a connection to it.

An exciting new collaboration represented by many fine, dynamic, young Australian improvisers. Compositions and vocals by Krisin Berardi who, with The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra are jazz orchestral at its finest.
This groovy, hard swinging arrangement by Ross Irwin (Cat Empire). Features solos by wonderkind pianist, Steven Barry, and trombone legend Dave Panichi and some tough ensemble playing.

Mark Fitzgibbon Quartet - Nailing     Jazz, Swing, Instrumental 20/05/2011
Lauded as one of the most swinging, insightful pianists Australia has produced, legendary pianist and composer Mark Fitzgibbon’s breadth of experience and talent is now documented in his irrepressible debut.
A medium swinger with a quirky melody heralds blistering solos from Rex and Fitzgibbon over cool chord changes and great swinging drumming from Craig Simon drives this along like crazy

Other tracks by Mark Fitzgibbon Quartet:  So Yesterday  -  Closer
Inside Out - Green Land, Grey Skies     Jazz, Acoustic, Instrumental 25/03/2011
Inside Out is Trumpet-man Paul Williamson’s new Quartet. Formed on his return from a 2year stint in Dublin. Entrancing piano interludes and fiery ensemble interactions ignite their exciting, contemporary sound.
This composition was written on reflection of the many journeys travelling around the countryside of Ireland whilst residing there in 2006-2008. The Green Lands and Grey Skies seem to have an intangible effect of pervading facets of daily life.

Other tracks by Inside Out:  Shop And Gargle  -  The Stoop
Howard Cairns Quintet - Newell Waltz     Jazz, Acoustic, Downbeat, Soundscapes 14/10/2010
The Howard Cairns Quintet's music is chordless, melody based, and pulse orientated. The music is in turn reflective, tongue in cheek, good humored , dark, even hopeful!
The artist was inspired to write this piece after a long drive down the Newell Highway and the music depicts just that, reminding the listener of long lost memories. Starting off with solo bass, the muted horns that join in suit the feeling of nostalgia of the piece.

Other tracks by Howard Cairns Quintet:  500,000  -  While No One Was Looking
Misinterprotato - Chase     Jazz, Instrumental, Acoustic, Soundscapes 03/09/2010
Misinterprotato are one of Australia’s most inventive ensembles. More than a traditional jazz trio, this group expands the capacities of the classic piano/bass/drums combination with elements of the avant-garde.
Solo piano starts this piece off lightheartedly, evoking images of children playing tag in a playground. Drums and bass join, and the playful mood takes on a more focused feel for the lead, steering the piece towards a furious solo section, exhausted and tumbling in a heap at the end.

Other tracks by Misinterprotato:  The Gentle War  -  Tailgater
Ben Winkelman Trio - The Seven Odyssey     Jazz, Instrumental, Experimental, Soundscapes 29/07/2010
Odysseys’ nine original compositions showcase the breadth of Winkelman’s musical interests, including Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, resulting in a warm and diverse soundscape.
A short punchy intro of descending chords starts this piece that interchanges feel from an upbeat stride to flowing melodies. The piano takes over the main melody sparsely accompanied by the drums, leading into a cat and mouse chase between drums and piano through the solos' sections.

Other tracks by Ben Winkelman Trio:  Symmetry  -  Avian Melancholy
Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowsky - I've Never Been In Love Before     Jazz, Instrumental, Swing 08/07/2010
Two of Australia’s most widely recognized jazz exports, Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowsky, bring you their highly anticipated new release, "On A Clear Day." Creative renditions of familiar standards.
A familiar piece given a fresh coat of paint. This standard, a staple from the musical 'Guys and Dolls' is usually played at a much slower pace, but this version keeps that intention whilst lifting the energy. This new burst of life opens the players up for freedom to improvise.

Other tracks by Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowsky:  When The Sun Comes Out  -  Soul Eyes
Joe Chindamo - Man Of Constant Sorrow     Jazz, Blues, Country, Instrumental 28/05/2010
Born in 1961. Commenced accordion lessons aged 6, switched to piano at 16. Attended Melbourne State College, majoring in music and maths. Continued piano studies with Massimo Bertucci in Italy.
A long slow introductory build up to this fast paced folk piece shows a beautiful interpretation of the original, with the previously vocal melody sung by the piano and intertwined with blues guitar. The violinist plays a worthy fiddle.

Other tracks by Joe Chindamo:  Raising Arizona  -  Hotel California
Andrea Keller Quartet - For Bernie     Jazz, Swing 26/05/2010
The Andrea Keller Quartet comprises talented bandleader and composer Andrea Keller on piano, Eugene Ball on trumpet, Ian Whitehurst on tenor saxophone and Joe Talia on drums.
A beautiful laid back piece where the quartet creates a setting for the alto and tenor saxophones to share an improvisational conversation before handing the song over to a guitar melody. A tribute piece for one of Andrea's guest collaborators.

Other tracks by Andrea Keller Quartet:  Galumphing 'Round The Nation  -  The Incredible View
Jex Saarelaht Quartet - Threeways     Jazz, Instrumental, Live Performance 24/05/2010
Fiveways is the debut of the Jex Saarlaht Quartet. Recorded at the 2009 Stonnington Jazz Festival at Chapel Off Chapel. Fiveways delivers five original compositions enticing you to want more.
Sparse drumming and a light and subtle chord progression played by the piano make the base for this captivating piece filled with soft lingering saxophone lines. A truly enchanting composition.

Other tracks by Jex Saarelaht Quartet:  Thirteen/Two Minds  -  Pepperman
Way Out West - Music For April     Jazz, World, African, Instrumental 24/05/2010
Trumpeter and composer Peter Knight and Vietnamese traditional music virtuoso Dung Nguyen lead this six piece of talented cross cultural instrumentalists that infuse jazz melodies with international influences.
The longing nostalgia of Peter Knight's trumpet muses a soulful melody punctuated with long pauses with over an ostinato from the drums and mallet percussion.

Other tracks by Way Out West:  Blues For A Jungster  -  The Sedonista
Allan Browne's New Rascals - East St Kilda Toodleoo     Jazz 04/03/2010
Four decades after he began his career, Allan Browne is still living the jazz life. With the New Rascals, he continues to breathe fresh life and vitality into music.
‘Allan Browne and his sidemen have made an album with a trad heart but which is undeniably modern. It’s hard to do and the reason an album like this is a rarity.’
Shane Nichols, Australian Financial Review, 31 Mar 2001

Other tracks by Allan Browne's New Rascals:  Days Of Wine And Roses  -  Be Still Hold On Tight
Snag - Hey, Guess What?     Jazz 04/03/2010
An eclectic blend of jazz, South American rhythms and folk themes with popular western music influences. Their originals reflect a diversity, from thematic based Ornette Coleman-type to Nordic influenced mood.
“Award winning saxophonist Julien Wilson, at turns lithe and tempestuous, combines well with the wonderfully fluid guitar of Stephen Magnusson. Their European bandmates interact with a high level of interplay and
provide very strong rhythmic support. SNAG is a group very much deserving a wider recognition.”
Gerry Koster, PBS FM

Other tracks by Snag:  For Gabriel  -  Mingus For Now
Rob Burke - Pygmy Lullaby     Jazz 04/03/2010
Robert Burke has been playing with members of this group for over 20 years, resulting in a strong musical understanding within the ensemble - an Australian style of improvised music.
Pygmy Lullaby is a traditional African tune that I first heard being performed by Scandinavian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. A beautiful melody that suits the melodic nature of the ensemble.

Other tracks by Rob Burke:  Wide Eyed  -  Beatrice
Anton Delecca Quartet - Catalyst     Jazz 09/02/2010
Ranging from complex harmonic and rhythmic explorations to simple folk inspired pieces, these 9 original tracks highlight the unity of the ensemble and the breadth of their musical interests.
'Lost City' was recorded in March 2009 and features much of the band's current repertoire that has been developed playing in Melbourne jazz clubs over the last two years.

Other tracks by Anton Delecca Quartet:  The Beautiful Corner  -  Regulated
Los Cabrones - Mucho Muncho     World, Jazz 17/11/2009
Australia's premier Afro-Cuban Latin-Jazz group, the 15 piece, LOS CABRONES, release their long awaited debut. Formed in '95, LOS CABRONES compliment their original grooves with tunes from the masters.
Los Cabrones have been touted as Australia's premier Afro-Cuban latin jazz group and this eponymous debut recording goes a long way in justifying the hype. Cribbing chops from New York's latin jazz greats, the sound is defined by unrelenting, dizzy polyrhythms, 'tight as' horn arrangements.

Other tracks by Los Cabrones:  Hola Que Tal  -  Nikko Solero
Theak-tet - Dust Mite     Jazz 17/11/2009
Founded in 1997 to provide a platform for improvised music compositions, Theak-tet create a synergy which allows a freedom and communication rarely possible with thrown together groups.
"Listen to the sinuous cohesion of the rhythm section on Dust Mite, the slippery guitar of James Muller on Paul Bley and the disquieting mood of Gamla Stan, with David Theak's saxophone in a flux between pastel-hued lines and sudden flurries of sharper colour."
John Shand (SMH)
