Aviator Lane are a band who take their time. In the three years since the release of their second, self-titled EP, Aviator Lane have toured in Europe and Australia, supported the likes of Low, Jason Molina, Holly Throsby et al, and played at the 2008 Adelaide leg of the Laneway Festival.
During this time, they have slowly but meticulously built up the songs for their debut full length, Common Distance. The subdued introspection and intimacy of their earlier recordings remains, but something has altered. Songs about courtesans, funeral rites and serial love letters are fused with a minimalist combination of electronic and live percussion, chiming guitars and a more concise and direct form of expression. The album was mixed by Tim Whitten and Jed Palmer and mastered by Roger Seibel in Phoenix, Arizona.
Best Untried is the first single from Common Distance, released in June 2009. Its accompanying track, Onto the Stilts, is one of the centre pieces of the new album. Both of these songs show how the band now combine their penchant for subtle arrangements and sombre reflection with the dynamic possibilities of a full band lineup (with hints of an unhealthy obsession with French pop thrown in).
